Humorous On-Hold Messages Really Work ? And That’s No Joke!

Humor

Be honest.  What comes to mind when you think about being put on hold after calling a business?  Granted, it’s not something most of us spend quality time pondering.  But the average person would probably equate it with the same fondness of heart they feel toward, let’s say being stuck in rush hour traffic or waiting in the lobby of the dentist’s office.  Wouldn’t it be great to hear some interesting trivia or perhaps an occasional spot of humor?  You can bet on it!  And so are an increasing number of savvy businesses.

As more companies are harnessing the power of on hold messages than ever before, message on hold production has come more fully into the mainstream of the advertising industry, and has been progressively shedding its “elevator music” image by mixing in a dash of wit here or a pinch of wisdom there.

Fading is the day when the only option callers on hold have is listening to a uniform style presentation of products and services.  And, though the straight ahead approach will always be perfectly valid, and is the only practical choice for some types of businesses (more on that in a moment), many callers seem to enjoy a brief exodus from the often too serious workday.

The challenge for any company when considering the content of on hold messages is to keep callers on the line, remind them that they haven’t dropped off the company radar and of course, simultaneously generate sales, or at least spark enough interest in products and services to get them talking to salespeople.  If you own a business and have ever mulled over the idea of creating custom messages on hold, remember, when adding-in humor or trivia it needs to be kept in good taste.  As in any other customer interaction a little discernment goes a long way.

Humor At Work: How To Be Funny Without Being A Jerk

In the national bestseller Flow, University of Chicago psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi suggests two key factors determine our overall happiness:

•    Our relations with other people
•    How we experience our work

You can improve both areas by bringing humor to work each day.

Harvard Business Review (September 2003) reports that executives with a sense of humor climb the corporate ladder more quickly and earn more money than their counterparts.

Stu Robertshaw, a University of Wisconsin professor emeritus of education and psychology, cites a study in which a firm experienced a 21 percent decrease in staff turnover and a 38 percent decrease in Friday absenteeism after incorporating humor into the workplace.

And in another study, management professor David Abramis of California State University, Long Beach, determined that employees who have fun on the job are more productive and creative; are better decision makers and team players; and have fewer absentee, sick and late days.

A sense of humor offers many job benefits:

•    Reduces stress
•    Stimulates creativity
•    Boosts motivation and morale
•    Strengthens teams
•    Makes meetings more effective
•    Facilitates open communication
•    Improves customer services
•    Improves the bottom line

A good laugh reduces blood pressure, increases heart rate, massages internal organs and reduces the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood. It boosts blood flow to your brain, which means you learn more, forget less and feed your curiosity.

Humor also keeps your life in balance, allowing you to more effectively juggle personal goals, family commitments and work demands. You’ll maintain your sanity and perspective as you reduce tension in stressful situations and rise above crises.

Humor and Creativity

Humor encourages creativity, allowing you to view challenges from new angles. You’ll enjoy playing with a variety of ideas and making innovative associations.

Music Teaching Tips That Work

Most of us music teachers aim to offer the best services to our students and let them learn their chosen instruments in the most efficient manner. Having a good teaching strategy will not only give your students fun learning experience but it will also earn you respect in the field. Thus, I have listed some music teaching tips that will enable you to teach your students effectively.

* Target both your students’ minds and bodies – Especially if your students are still young, you must understand that they may need a combination of physical and mental exercises and activities in learning. Aside from the fun it may bring to them, the possibility of understanding and recalling the lesson you are teaching may also increase.

* Learn how to energize students during boring moments – there will always be some instances wherein you have to discuss some important topics that are somewhat uninteresting to your students. These may lead to an inattentive class or worse, a sleeping class. Being observant and flexible is important to bring back a lively discussion. Why not ask them to do some stretching or tell some old jokes. Detaching fro the lesson plan for some minutes is better that to teach a daydreaming class.

* Provide your students with the best facilities – this is not one of my music teaching tips but rather it is your key to attract more clients and students. If your students learn and practice their instruments comfortably, you may not need to explain some lessons further. Your students may have greater determination and urge to learn any lesson.

* Give commendations to well-doers – giving applause for those who excel and have positive attitudes in the class will even boost their moral. This might as well motivate all the others to exert their efforts in learning their instrument and join those who have earned commendations.
